Wideband Multimode Circulator (WMC)

Our Wideband Multimode Circulators (WMC) are three-port components allowing for efficient management of multimode light. They can be used to combine illumination and collection channels in a single optical fiber or to combine two illumination signals. They are fused fiber devices featuring a flat spectral response over a wide range, while their asymmetrical structure promotes an improved transfer ratio.

WMCs are available in a variety of optical fiber diameters and numerical apertures (NA). They provide an efficient, versatile, and robust solution for multimode light management in applications such as diffuse reflectance, fluorescence spectroscopy, or optogenetics.

Overview

A WMC can function as a circulator or a combiner. Compared to standard multimode couplers, the WMC features greater efficiencies in and out of a common port and with better isolation. This three-port device allows incident light at Port 1 to travel in only one direction (transfer) while allowing bi-directional travel between Ports 2 and 3 (transmission).

When used as a circulator, a signal entering Port 1 will exit Port 2 with minimal loss, while a signal entering Port 2 will exit Port 3 preferentially, with high isolation towards Port 1. When used as a combiner, light entering Ports 1 and 3 will exit Port 2 with minimal loss.
